St. Francis-Brooklyn, NY failed to make the ranks of those 5 original schools that never made it to the NCAA Tournament one less since 1948. And it was close. It was they're third NEC conference tournament loss. The Robert Morris Colonials from near Pittsburgh won the Northeast title over the NEC's top-seeded team on the Terriers' home gym, the 4th-smallest in NCAA D1, to make thier first trip to the NCAAs since 2010. In the interim years, Robert Morris won a huge home game in the 2011 NIT opening round against Kentucky. In the last three years that school had to watch other teams win the Northeast and cut down the nets celebrating their NCAA ticket being punched.

Doesn't look like any of the other non-NCAA appearing 5 have any good chances of their breaking that spell. Army was already eliminated early in the Patriot League tournament by Navy. Northwestern is perhaps year or two away from making any impact in the Big Ten under head coach Chris Collins, a former Chicago Bulls ball boy when his dad Doug was coach--and it might get tougher now with Maryland and Rutgers newly installed. That's assuming the Wildcats don't go off on a strong run AND win the Big 10 in Chicago. The Citadel? No way out of the Southern!

North Dakota St. Bisons edges out the South Dakota St. Jackrabbits to go dancing in a good one for the Summit League title in Sioux Falls' new arena 57-56. Amazing that it's in their rebuilding year with an all-new coaching staff and losing 6 seniors with a 5th place projection:
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400768040

#7 Gonzaga gets revenge on BYU for ending its home winning streak and wins the West Coast Conference Tournament in Las Vegas for its 14th title. The Bulldogs likely will get a #2 seed out West:
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400768043

Valparaiso and Bryce Drew--remember him and that buzzer beater over Mississippi in 1998 in Oklahoma City that made them that year's Cinderellas (father and son angle certainly didn't hurt either)?--are back dancing for the second time as head coach, having dispatched Wisconsin-Green Bay on the Crusader. Bryce is now the coach succeeding from his dad Homer (older bro Scott coaches Baylor). The Crusaders fought with key injuries but still with enough depth to carry them through last night; the on-court adversity was nothing for them. Bryce might get scooped up to a bigger program at age 34:
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400766909

Only the Patriot League will crown their champ that will punch their NCAA ticket tonight. It will be between #4 Lafayette Leopards and #5 American Eagles on Lafayette's home court. Top seed Bucknell was upset by Lafayette in the semis at home with American knocking off #2 Colgate. Like with the America East, Colonial, Northeast, Horizon, and the Big Sky, the Patriot League conducts their conference tournament on the sites of higher-seeded campus venue.

Got more clips in anticipation of the upcoming ESPN 30 For 30 "I Hate Christian Laettner"! In case you haven't heard, the subject of the classic 1992 Duke-Kentucky East Regional Final in Philadelphia WILL come up. And yes, it will deal with the infamous Laettner stomp on Aminu Timberlake, because Laettner thought it was him who did the pushing off flying to the baseline when it was actually Pelphrey.. and the ref saw that in front of him. Timberlake almost diffused it with his laugh and clapping but still satisfied with his job:

Comparing the Duke Blue Devils to the Death Star that usually succeeds for people to tune in. Why wasn't the NDCELE mentioned with that?

Christian Laettner visits ESPN's First Take joining the desk in promoting I Hate Christian Laettner--heard some great things about it:

Cal Golden Bears, because of a horrid performance in January, was even on the NIT bubble for admission. Didn't eventually get in that last night. Has declined an invite to participate in the 2015 edition of the CBI largely because the school would have to pay $50K for hosting the first game and at least an additional $75K in the semis and beyond. Postseason tickets are a tough sell in Berkeley, and Cal's athletic department had to wonder whether it was worth it to fork over the cash. So the Golden Bears' postseason is over:

So too has Penn St. despite turning their season around:

The NCAA's lone independent in D1 is getting some postseason time tonight with no small part to its upset win at Michigan earlier this season. In fact guess what(?), they get to kick off NCAA D1 men's 2015 postseason play with New Hampshire tonight on their home floor in the postseason college basketball debut for both teams!

I'm picking Kentucky to win all this year, largely because lots of people are impressed with this undefeated campaign played significantly by . NCAA D1 ball hadn't witnessed a major conference team winning it all since Indiana's legendary 1975-76 team with Scott May, Quinn Buckner, and Kent Benson. UNLV could've done that back in 1991--and lots of people like myself wished the Runnin Rebels did--but for one thing they were actually a dominant national powerhouse back then coming from a mid-major conference, the Big West (formerly Pacific Coast). There's a lot of lamentation on them since Jerry Tarkanian's death. Anyway, Kentucky's team got potentially 8 players being NBA draft picks led by Karl Anthony Towns who also plays for the Dominican Republic. There's also the Harrison twins, Trey Lyles (born in Saskatchewan to a Canadian mom and American dad, raised in Indiana, will very likely play for Canada), Devin Booker, and Tyler Ullis--McDonald's All-Americans all. But there's even upperclassmen on the team even with all the focus on the freshmen on the starting lineup. Then, there's the aspect of because of the traditional history and success, fans want to see UK fail. Moreover, some people hate John Calipari, who will be enshrined at the Naismith, because he's seen as a shyster and could leave them like UMASS and Memphis after him. But he's good as a coach who got all of his young players, who could otherwise be more "about me" and into social media but got all of his players sold into playing and being like a team.

No Missouri D1 schools made any of the postseason tournaments--Mizzou and St. Louis are rebuilding, SW Missouri St., Missouri-Kansas City, and Southeast Missouri St. all were eliminated early in mid-major conference tournaments and had mediocre regular season records. Had no chance to advance unless they won the conference ones.

How TSN in Canada will cover 2015 March Madness now with multiple channels with every game now televised. I wonder now with those channels will TSN give the women's tournament some love:

There will be loads of info and thoughts to report next week regarding the tournaments. But with the NCAA men's D III about to have their Final Four tonight in longstanding venue in Salem, Virginia, I must mention that quickly.

The Augustana (IL) Viklings will face the Babson Beavers in the first national semis. The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins and the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers (Terry Porter's alma mater) will battle in the other in the hopes of being the new champion who will be crowned on the weekend.

We also got our men's D2 Elite Eight this year at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana that will start Wednesday. But I'll get to that on Monday.

List of the 28 Canadians in the men's NCAA Tournament at the Division I level (as you expect, the Toronto are is heavily repped):

South Region

Gonzaga: Kevin Pangos, Holland Landing, Ont.; Kyle Wiltjer, Portland, Ore. (holds dual citizenship); Dustin Triano, Tsawwassen, B.C.
San Diego St: Kevin Zabo, Gatineau, Que.
Utah: Dallin Bachynski, Calgary
Iowa St: Naz Long, Mississauga, Ont.

East Region

Villanova: Dylan Ennis, Brampton, Ont.
Lafayette: Jake Newman, Surrey, B.C.
Providence: Junior Lomomba, Montreal
Dayton: Dyshawn Pierre, Whitby, Ont.
Oklahoma: Dinjiyl Walker, Thornhill, Ont.
Albany: Richard Peters, Pickering, Ont.
Virginia: Marial Shayok, Ottawa

West Region

Oregon: Dillon Brooks, Mississauga, Ont.
Harvard: Agunwa Okolie, Ajax, Ont.; Chris Egi, Markham, Ont.; Patrick Steeves, Montreal
Baylor: Kenny Cherry, Montreal

Midwest Region

Buffalo: Jarryn Skeete, Brampton, Ont.; Rodell Wigginton, Dartmouth, N.S.
Kentucky: Trey Lyles, Saskatoon
New Mexico St: Daniel Mullings, Toronto; Tanveer Bhullar, Toronto; Matthew Taylor, Brampton, Ont.; Jalyn Pennie, Ajax, Ont.; Rashawn Browne, Toronto
Valparaiso: Tevonn Walker, Montreal; Max Joseph, Montreal

Tomorrow afternoon, D2 men's ball will kick off its Elite Eight round in Evansville, Indiana. Surely in a state that really adores basketball all over the state, I can hopefully expect the Ford Center to be close to be filled starting all day with fans that will travel well.

Oh that's real nice, Indiana legislators (especially the more far-right religious Republicans). All in the name of the "religious freedom", when it really isn't and allows space and impact for discrimination. Especially with the NCAA ready to embrace the Final Four right now at its backyard and the organization is based there. Make sure you'll protect yourselves financially as a state and its economy:

We're now in Final Four mode in Indianapolis. These four surviving schools--Kentucky, Duke, michigan St., and Wisconsin--are about as blue blood as it can get, each with a storied and accomplished men's basketball program lasting for many years. All four of them have legendary coaches, though most casual fans still don't know who Bo Ryan is, despite having coached in the University of Wisconsin network basketball team for decades, it seems. One already enshrined in the Naismith Basketball hall of Fame with other three certainies in the near future. All that said all eyes are on that currently undefeated Kentucky Wildcats 38-0 with two more games to go in what seems to some people see as the Kentucky Basketball Invitational at the Lucas Oil Stadium. Two more games before becoming immortalized like the last undefeated champs since the 1975-76 Indiana hoosiers. The Hoosiers were before my time, and surely many of yours here. i want to see history, something we haven't seen attempted since Duke stopped UNLV at the 1991 Final Four national semis also in Indianapolis. Even when Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, LSU, Texas A&M, and more recently Notre Dame all have the Kentucky Wildcats on the ropes, only to see the Wildcats come back on top for good. Will we see I guess it's only right to have at it all in a state that reveres basketball. Can anybody out of the other three teams can stop Kentucky with its young, selfless team who have bought into what Cal is selling?

Wisconsin seems to be the last, authentic team that everybody thinks can put a halt to the Kentucky Wildcats' undefeated march. I think Wisconsin can do this and pull the upset, and it wouldn't stun me if they did tonight, as some people are predicting. The Badgers surely want to avenge for what happened at this very stage to the Wildcats with All-American Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker and their teammates size and length that can trouble them. Wisconsin is very, very careful with the basketball and have a great defense and unconventional offense. Problem is, Kentucky has such a historically great offense and team depth, allowing for platoon subbing. For an upset to happen Kaminisky and Dekker would have to have an out of body basketball playing experience against Kentucky's their length, defense, leadership, and athleticism. And avoid fouling. No downing them for Kentucky. It'll be close with UK winning.

As for Duke-Michigan St. Lots of people counted out Michigan St. in the the ncaa tournament. Travis trice has controlled the ball all through out very much. even after finding their defense. But the Spartans lack an answer to Jalil Okafor and give up too much size strength, forcing double teaming. Duke will turn this into a track meet.

So there you have it: i'm predicting a Kentucky-Duke championship game

Superstation WTBS (I still call it that) will once again have the Final Four national semifinals tonight live with CBS taking over for the national championship for the final time. Starting next year with the Final Four in Houston, WTBS will carry all games in the Final Four stage as part of the current CBS/Turner Sports NCAA Tournament deal.

Turner Sports is bringing back the team-centric Teamcasts for the second consecutive Final Four that will be used on both TNT and TruTV involving all four teams called Team Stream by Bleacher Report". Meanwhile, Superstation WTBS will continue to use the traditional unbiased national broadcast with Jim Nantz, Bill Raferty, Grant Hill, and Tracey Wolfson. This is who TNT and TruTV will use tonight:

Tom Werme/Alaa Abdelnaby/Chris Spatola - Duke Team Stream on TNT
Brian Anderson/Mateen Cleaves/Shireen Saski - Michigan State Team Stream on truTV
Dave Baker/Rex Chapman/Michael Eaves - Kentucky Team Stream on TNT
Wayne Larrivee/Mike Kelley/Phil Dawson - Wisconsin Team Stream on truTV

The TSN channels will air the Final Four live on TSN2 using that CBS-Turner Sports feed.
RDS, the Quebecois French-Canadian sports channels that's part pof the bell Media empire like TSN is showing the Final Four live on RDS INFO with RDS showing the encore presentation of both games at 10pm (US/Canada/Mexico time). RDS will show the national championship game live on Monday night.

That Kentucky-Notre Dame game last Saturday night was the highest-rated college basketball game ever on cable TV. I can expect the Kentucky-Wisconsin game tonight to eclipse that.

Sorry Dave, moving the Final Four out of Indianapolis this late in protest of the law is not an option; it's certainly not fair to fans of the Final Four schools and to the NABC coaches in town for the convention who made the travel arrangements to Indianapolis. Nor is it realistic. A better goal, though highly unlikely, would be to have the players protest by not playing:

Hope many of you enjoyed your Easter and Passover weekend while watching the basketball!

Ladies and gentlemen, I now present to you, to get you ready for the 2015 NCAA national championship tonight, the latest ESPN 30 For 30 installment "I Hate Christian Laettner". My thoughts will come later.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkc6nRoZ1HM

Well, there won't be an undefeated Kentucky in the NCAA championship tonight. Definitely not against the Duke Devils in what could've been the sexiest matchup between the most successful and maligned basketball programs. The Wisconsin Badgers ruined those plans Saturday night in a rematch of the Final Four exactly a year ago. It'll be a interesting game to watch. Mike Krzyzewski hasn't lost in the NCAA title game since 1986 (to Louisville in Dallas). So what if the dorky looking Frank Kaminsky isn't capable of achieving things. I'll deal with all of this and more after the championship night.

We'll get more complete tomorrow.

Apologies for not updating lately here. Likely to get back into this here more likely less than two weeks from now with updating, scores, and thoughts on the just-completed 2014-15 NCAA and NAIA seasons. But to get things back on track...

Following is a list of 64 potential names for the University of North Dakota for its athletic department to replace the controversial Fighting Sioux name and going for two years nameless. A y next to it indicates to number of yeses it got from the 64-person board. Even just one must survival to the next round. My choice Dragons wasn't among them. Nodaks, a cool name for North Dakota residents, got the most so far with 7 followed by North Stars:

Still haven't got back to what am hoping to do on this thread. Apparently, I'll get more time next week after the Canada Day/Fourth of July time...

Big news now is that Wisconsin's Bo Ryan will retire after next season after 15 years. Will that motivate his team without Frank "the Tank" Kaminsky and keeber . And he certainly won't be the only one: likely there will be some other notable names currently roaming the sidelines who could hang it up soon. Jim Boeheim at Syracuse just now has Mike Hopkins to succeed him. San Diego St.'s Steve Fisher and SMU's Larry Brown annointed Brian Dutcher and Tim Jankovich, respectively:

To paraphrase Peaches and Herb's classic hit, Nike and Michigan will be "reunited and it feels so gooood". The two together were all the rage back in the 1990s and early 2000s as many young men and women were rocking that Michigan Nike gear back then thanks in no small part to the Fab Five:

No new college basketball program is coming in the 2015-16 D1 season. But there is a merger of sorts. The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs have merged with the University of Texas-Brownsville Ocelots to become the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley Vazqueros effective July 1. This is more of the University of Texas' and the Texas state Congress' doing. UTRVG will take Texas-Pan American's place in the Western Athletic Conference starting next season.

Looked as though yesterday a US$60 million settlement from several class action lawsuits approved by US District Judge Claudia Wilken in the NCAA licensing will go through, but the NCAA filed an Ed O'Bannon case injunction late last night with potentially reaching the US Supreme Court, if needed. This means the court case will be tied up to at least 2016-2017. The settlement will still come from the Electronic Arts and the College Licensing Company regardless. And that's a crucial step. But for any college video game to return will likely be no earlier than 2017 (and likely later than that) once a formal royalties structure is set up AND after the litigation process is finally settled. Some of this reminds me of the 1984 Supreme Court case University of Oklahoma Board of Regents vs. NCAA that Oklahoma won over control of NCAA sports TV rights, specifically over college football.

Something more local to me in college basketball recruiting. The highly acclaimed St. Louis high school small forward star Jayson Tatum from Chaminade College Prep (David Lee and Bradley Beal) has selected Duke to attend very recently in the fall of 2016. It also the school that Chris Carrawell from University City High went to. Dad Justin was a SLU Billiken from 1989-1991 and now coaches CBC after years at Soldan. In fact, the Tatums and Beals go way back:

Is it really going to happen sooner than thought with a (limited) return of college basketball teams thanks to 2K Sports' NBA2K series?
