In loving memory of Dennis Johnson...

Austin Toros coach Dennis Johnson's sudden death following a Toros' practice from a heart attack, needless to say, has sent shockwaves throughout the league. It happened 22 minutes after a one-on-one game with Jamar Smith. He was also the first coach of the Florida Flame on the road to professional recovery from a horrible domestic dispute with his wife. He worked himself up from as a 5-9 high school benchwarmer to a workhouse forklifter to Pepperdine standout and 1979 NBA Finals MVP with Seattle to one of the best defenders the NBA had ever seen armed with a high basketball IQ that was seemed destined to a lasting NBA head coaching job. A memorial was held almost two Sundays ago with several Celtics, Sonics, and Suns stars attending. Two Toros games were postponed because of this. Austin forward Jamal Smith had a Toros home jersey with the number 3, what Johnson wore in his Celtics days, was draped over DJ's usual seat on the bench. In their first game since his death against the Colorado 14ERS, the Toros showed the usual stuff prior to it:video retrospective tribute, words from Toros execs and players, special music, and moment of silence. The loss stopped a six-game winning streak. The Toros are also wearing a commemorative patch in DJ's memory for the remainder of the season. Because of this, Dale Osbourne was promoted to head coach with Anahiem's head coach Larry Smith becoming his assistant for the rest of the season. I knew Dennis wanted them back on court as soon as possible after the mourning period. www.nba.com/dleague/austin

On to more positive stuff in the NBDL

The first ever Gillette NBDL All-Star Game presented by 24 Hour Fitness at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas was low-key affair compared to what its much older brother had to offer as you would expect. It was like a distant undercard fight with NBA scouts checking what the highest minor league has to offer with its premier talent. But the game was intense from start to finish unlike the NBA players coasting in the first quarter and turning things up a couple of notches later on. These players, when granted a fair chance, can play at the NBA level no doubt. Bakersfield's Gerry McManara and Idaho's Rondell Taylor were additional replacements. Former George Washington star Pops Mensah-Bonsu of Ft. Worth was named the first ever All-Star MVP with his 30 points 7 rebounds and 2 blocks to give the East a 114-100 victory. Pops, though undersized as a power forward, displays great athleticism that will serve him well in the NBA. He is very highlight-worthy with his emphatic blocks and dunks, but he lacks an array of low-post moves. Needs to work on his shooting and may serve as a spark plug off the bench. He'll have a great future playing for Great Britain internationally as it boosts its talents. Aussie Luke Schenscher had a good All-Star game coming off the bench by running effectively and taking passes, even hard ones and converting them into baskets. As a post player though, there wasn't much to see. He had 15 points and 6 rebounds.

George "The Iceman" Gervin may very well end up getting involved with the expansion RGV NBDL team in the front office with a couple of coaching candidates to be examined.

Because of Dennis Johnson's death, Anahiem Arsenal coach Larry Smith resigned to become the Toros' assistant for the rest of the season. No replacement has been named for the Arsenal as of yet. Speaking of them, it's tough to get noticed in an off-Broadway-like setting like in Orange County with so many other stuff competing for the family dollar. And that's not counting the ABA's expansion Orange County Gladiators coming next season. But those who do come to watch enjoy the experience. It's up to fans there and elsewhere to develop a curiousity and look for stuff like this, or else it will go the way of the Southern California Surf and Anahiem Amigos (to say nothing of the phantom ABA Anahiem Roadrunners)--nice to see their histories mentioned briefly here. www.latimes.com/news/printedition/calif ... &cset=true

Des Moines is officially the latest NBDL city awarded an expansion team, as expected. Team will called Iowa, and its home games will be at the Wells Fargo Arena.

I called it, sorta. Ft. Wayne will join the NBDL next season as it returns to pro basketball, and it's easy to assume that the Indiana Pacers (and maybe the Detroit Pistons, of all teams, with them). Also here. And Fort Wanye's coverage.

The NBDL Coach of the Year Award is now renamed in memory of the late Austin Toros coach Dennis Johnson. Idaho's Brian Gates was announced today (Wednesday) as the winner of that award.

Nick Nurse, former University of Northern Iowa star, will coach the Des Moines expansion team. Gary Garner joins as Nurse's assistant. www.nba.com/dleague/iowa/

More will come later...

NBDL playoff season started.

Western Conference
Colorado 14ERS vs. Albuquerque Thunderbirds
Winner gets to face Idaho Stampede for the West title

Eastern Conference
Sioux Falls Skyforce vs. Ft. Worth Flyers
Winner gets to face Dakota Wizards

Best thing about it: NO NDCELE NBDL CHAPTER IN THE PLAYOFFS AT ALL!!!!

NBATV will have the playoff coverage.

Utah's new NBDL team announced their new name and GM. Please welcome the Utah Flash (no word whether it's in tribute to Dwayne Wade or the DC Comics superhero, but it does use black, red, and white from the Heat's colo(u)rs). Nice logo. Flash beat out Dash, Dynos, and Heroes. Dabvid Fredman is the Flash's GM. www.nba.com/dleague/utah

I suggest that Ft. Wayne should hire former Indiana Mr. Basketball Damon Bailey as its first head coach. Maybe even call it the Fury like its old longstanding CBA team.

Sunday, we will have a new NBDL champ when the expansionist Colorado 14ERS travel to Bismark to face the Dakota Wizards.

Before then, the Dakota Wizards, who got a bye to the Eastern Division Championship, defeated the visiting Sioux Falls Skyforce 115-113. The Skyforce couldn't hold that 5-point lead to begin the fourth quarter. Frank Williams scored a game-high 30 points in a losing effort.

Sioux Falls knocked off Ft. Worth in the opening semifinal 125-108.

Over in the West, Colorado edged the Idaho Stampede on the road 94-91 in OT Friday. Antonie Hood drained two free throws in seven seconds in overtime to seal the victory. Elton Brown netted 26 points and 12 boards. Pooh Jeter had 19 points and dished nine assists. Brown was named NBDL Performance Player of the Week. The 14ERS ended the reign of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds as NBDL champs 130-100 despite Dijon Thompson scoring 24 points for the Albuquerque Wednesday.

Louis Admundson, now with Philadelphia, was named NBDL Rookie of the Year.

Your new NBDL champs are the Dakota Wizards who clinched it at home in front of their Bismarck fans, who set a new NBDL postseason attendance record (5322), in overtime against the new Colorado 14ERS Sunday night 129-121.

Darius Rice, former Miami Hurricane and nephew of NFL legend Jerry Rice, man, what a night for him! He came off the bench and scored 52 points including 11 three-pointers with one at the 4.5 second mark at regulation to tie it at 109 all.

Dakota becomes the second NBDL team in the league's six year history to win the title at home. Tonight a celebration will be held at a golf course. Fans are invited to attend.

Tough loss for Colorado despite erasing a 8-point halftime deficit. Pooh Jeter scored 30 points and 8 assists, Elton Brown netted 22 points and hauled 12 rebounds, and Tony Bobbitt had 29 in a losing effort.

David Stern seems pleased with the NBDL and with the Bismarck market (the smallest in the NBDL) local ownership as it implements experimental features to enhance the game. That flop of a basketball in the NBA still exists in the NBDL.

Congrats to the Dakota Wizards on their championship season!

41 NBDL players made the NBA playoffs. Out of them, 18 players had their teams eliminated.

Rio Grande Valley's NBDL team hopes it has some bite for its fans--they will be called the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. When there's the logo, I'll link it.

It was officially announced the RGV Vipers will act as the Spurs' farm team.
Because they will play at the Dodge Arena in Hildalgo, Texas, there's some speculation it was named in reference to that--Dodge Motors has a car named the Viper.

Four names for the new Ft. Wayne team survived the cut: Lightning, Coyotes, Mad Ants, and Fire.

If the RimRockers don't move to LaCrosse, it could very well fold.

Former Roanoke Dazzle coach Kent Davidson will coach the new Ft. Wayne NBDL expansion team.

After negotiations seemd dead for the Arkansas RimRockers to move to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, talks sprang back to life in the hopes of getting LaCrosse's first pro basketball team since the CBA's Catbirds.

As you may know former Ft. Worth Flyers coach Sam Vincent was hired to succeed Bernie Bickerstaff in Charlotte. Surely the move pleases His Royal Airness as he was a teammate of Vincent in his early Bulls days.

Bigger news out of the NBDL, NDBL President Phil Evans will resign on July 1. Matt Wurst takes a look at Evans' legacy in the NBDL.

The NBDL will hold a pre-draft camp on July 28-29 in Arlington, Texas.

More on the Ft. Wayne nicknames (can't use Fury?):
Coyotes (team will be aggressive and hungry like a pack of wolves)
Mad Ants (salute to General "Mad" Anthony Wayne)
Lightning (team will be quick as lightning and rain down thunderous dunks)
Fire (players will shoot so well they will be on fire)
Contest ends June 6

Former Missouri Tigers coach and Coach Krzyzewski protege Quin Snyder lands in the Texas state capital of Austin to coach the Austin Toros. He officially succeeds the late Dennis Johnson who died on February 22 but he actually follows interims Dale Osboune and Larry Smith. Good to see Coach Q back coaching, particularly with those who aren't really that far removed from college. So it's like back to college coaching in a sense.
www.nba.com/dleague/austin

Effective July 1, Dan Reed will take over from Phil Evans as NBDL President.

Reggie Geary took over at the helm of the Anaheim Arsenal's head coaching post following Larry Smith's departure to Austin.

Bad news for Arkansas RimRocker fans (and those who hoped they were making their way to LaCrosse, Wisconsin): talks fell through between its owner Larry Crain (he hoped to move them from Little Rock for the team's attendance at the Alltell Arena dipped that it wouldn't justify their lease there) and the LaCrosse Center due to the fact neither party fail to agree because the LaCrosse Center's lease demands were higher than Little Rock's.

So the RimRockers, like the Florida Flame before them, will be inactive for next season and hope to return in 2008-09.

After spending $3 million without turning a profit and making the NBDL postseason in their two seasons of existence, the Ft. Worth Flyers are headed out of the city and of the dreary Convention Center, possibly reforming in perhaps Reno. Another team could land there due to Ft. Worth's very close proximity to Dallas. Plus, there's even worse factors. www.star-telegram.com/287/story/135183.html

The Des Moines NBDL expansion team was named on Friday, but it's not going to be called by one of the aforementioned names listed in the fans' name the team contest, because of general fan dislike of the names selected and offered (too much obvious references to corn in Iowa for thing--I did like Scarecrows though). So I now present to you the Iowa Energy. Affiliation will be with the Chicago Bulls next season.

On Draft Day, the San Antonio Spurs, a team that wrongheadedly and shamefully made its way to the NBA title under very dubious circumstances, took ownership of the Austin Toros from Southwest Basketball LLC under David Kahn.

Jeff Ruland, the former Bruise Brother in his Washington Bullets days as McFilthy, became the new head coach for the Albequerque Thunderbirds replacing Michael Cooper who went back to the Now Deservedly Crumbling Evil Laker Empire WNBA Chapter. Ruland lands back into coaching after undeservedly being ran out of alma mater for a 2-28 (1-17 in MAAC) and blamed assistant Paul Dombrow for its abysmal record. But not before taking the Gaels to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2000, 2006, 2001) and three MAAC titles.

A better look at the Rio Grande Valley Vipers logo than from Rio Monitor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_Grande_Valley_Vipers

Morris McHone moves on from Sioux Falls and becomes the new Director of Basketball Development for the Austin Toros. McHone is, you may recall, the forgotten coach from the Spurs' low era back in 1984. www.nba.com/dleague/austin
