Des Moines, Iowa's capital city, currently has its NBDL expansion application being reviewed. I think Des Moines will be a great fit for the league. This proposed team, headed by former Northern Iowa Panther Nick Nurse, could play at the Wells-Fargo Arena

http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs. ... 03/SPORTS/

Has the CBA and the NBDL discussed the idea of merging their leagues since it make it less of an alpahbet soup sports league confusion and of the fact that the talent level in both leagues are top level and comperable to each other?

5-time Milwaukee Bucks NBA All-Star and Arkansas Razorback legend Sidney Moncrief, the first ever NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award recipient in 1983 (he also won in 1984), will replace Sam Vincent as coach of the Ft. Worth Flyers, the NBDL runner-up. Actually, Moncrief, who also coached for the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans for a couple of seasons owns a car dealership in the state of Arkansas, and Vincent, who has of course head coached Nigeria's and South Africa's national teams, are trading places with Vincent becoming a Mavs Assistant coach. www.nba.com/d-league/fortworth www.nba.com/features/moncrief_060913.html

Former Roanoke Dazzle head coach Kent Davison was named assistant coach of the Colorado 14ers. www.usbasket.com/nbdl/nbdl.asp

Sidney Moncreif's old Milwaukee Bucks teammate Paul Mokeski was added to the Fort Worth Flyers coaching staff. He's had some rough knocks in his life in the last several years, including losing his head coaching job for the ABA's Kansas City Knights for testing positive of cocaine (if I recall correctly)

Are the young players that get drafted or are undrafted free agents utilized properly in the NBDL? Depends on the team they are assigned to, but that needs to be addressed more, though they publicly acclaim the benefits. One thing is clear: NBA teams needs to take more advantage than they did last season (but how will they do it with joint affiliation heavily involved?).

Where you can get all of the fun of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds little trip to China, where they lost the first game to the Chinese National team, thanks to Wang Zhi Zhi's 16 points and 5 rebounds. The Thunderbirds lost to Team China 82-55 in Ningbo City www.nba.com/dleague/news/china06.html

The Thunderbirds lost again to the Chinese in Macau 86-78 on Saturday. Team China now makes its way towards the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, where they are the heavy faves.
www.nba.com/dleague/albuquerque/tbirds_ ... 61118.html

Speaking of Wang Zhi Zhi, I was reading an ESPN The Magazine story on him in the current issue. The article beings with an apology from Wang to the Chinses for being selfish. It talked about coming over to play for the Mavs as a gesture of goodwill from the Chinese government, the Cinese Basketball Association, and the Bayi Rockets, Wang's CBA club leading up to the Chinese getting the 2008 Olympics. The Chinese certainly didn't make it easy for him to be claimed by the NBA. He played OK for the Mavs in the early going and a big contract, but bounced around with the LA Clippers, when he signed as a free agent, and then the Miami Heat. Wang wanted to test himself more in the NBA instead of donning for the Middle Kingdom. He got labeled as soft and ended getting creamed in practices, struggling to keep his roster spot and playing time. Meanwhile, he defied the orders of the Chinese authorities and even the Mavs, whom the former wanted to play for the national team in the summer to qualify for big tournaments. The two even sent reps to look for him in his Dallas townhouse. but he had already left Dallas. He bought himself a Mercedes adn had a child with his girlfriend. He was proclaimed persona non grata in the eyes of the Chinese and threatened to revoke his passport. All the while, Yao Ming, his contemporary became a star amd did everything that was mandated of him by the Chinese (Wang and Yao had Peking duck together once when both were playing in the NBA). With Wang running out of options, he pleaded to get back into their good graces and play on the national team. He got, but not without cost. People's Liberation Army officers watched him like a hawk on his return back--BTW, Bayi is a reference to the PLA's founding date in Chinese, August 1. He has to undergo reeducation classes for being a traitor, and it is uncertain he'll regain his Chinese passport for personal travel at this point. It's very likely, with a tinge of sadness, that he'll never return to the NBA. He's 29 now and in Beijing he'll be 31. Sad.

NBATV have unvieled its 2006-07 NBDL TV schedule--60 games (but only the first week is shown)
www.nba.com/dleague/dleague_tv_schedule_061121.html

The TV fun begins with the Bakersfield Jam take on the NDCELE NBDL Chapter. Why them??

NBDL season has just started the other day. The defending champs Albuquerque are undefeated 2-0 atop of the Western Division.

Disturbingly--even though it just started--the Now Deservedly Crumbling Evil Laker Empire NBDL Chapter is also undefeated at 2-0 with (undeserved) wins against Anahiem and Bakersfield.

The Dakota Wizards are atop of the Eastern Division with two wins themselves.

At a time when the Idaho Stampede is losing five straight games and still winless, plans are in the NBDL that it could lose its Utah Jazz affiliation as a group is planning to have an expansion team in Orem, Utah for next season.

www.nba.com/dleague/utah/index.html

Hopefully, the NBDL will reinstitute teams back in the southeastern United States for next season too like the Florida Flame.

I would like to see the NBDL land in Canada. What I'm writing now is surely inspired in part to new pro basketball franchises (in the lower minor leagues) added and coming in the next few years. As you should know if you have been reading my posts, there is clearly pro basketball outside of Hogtown, just not NBA. I think it's going to happen in the next few years when Toronto decides to field its own farm club.

Going by the process of elimination involving the Canadian cities, Vancouver and Montreal would be far too big for it with Vancouver right now a CBA team and may return to the NBA in the future and may like to have one of their own NBDL teams too one day(which I will get to in the new year), likely after 2010. Montreal has little in the way of a pro basketball tradition, so it should stick with the Matrix. Calgary and Edmonton? Lethbridge should be content with the CBA and the upcoming Canadians. I dunno know. Might work. Medium sized cities like Halifax, Winnipeg, Hamilton, Ottawa, Saskatoon, and Quebec City could pull it off. Halifax loves basketball, but is the Nova Scotia economy stable enough for the NDBL at this point or when it hits? Moreover, what about the travel distance and costs? Quebec City might if the ABA Kebs could use the Arkansas RimRockers and the Bakersfield Jam as inspirations to jump to a higher level. That means they would need a bigger facility and deep-pocketed owners. Politically though Toronto might prefer to place a team in predominantly English Canada. Edmonton, Calgary, and Winnipeg may be eliminated for as prairie cities, though Calgary and Winnipeg have strong sporting support in the amatuer ranks. It might try Ottawa to keep it in the province of Ontario, but there's hardly any pro basketball tradition there either, as far as I know. Would the ScotiaBank Place be too big?

My choice would end up being Hamilton. All of the cities in the NBDL right now are, except for NDCELE NDBL Chapter, are in small-to-medium cities. The Canadian steel city is right next door like Geelong is to Melbourne in Victoria. The Copps Coliseum is just right and can scale down some seating for NBDL games, and Hamilton wouldn't worry about being caught in the middle between Buffalo and Toronto.

With Orem, Utah coming next season, the NBDL needs another team to even it out. I already suggested bringing back the Florida Flames, but if that's not possible, why not try Canada?

When you were considered one of the best in the sport, it's hard to cope with the mean curveballs life brings. That's what Jason (Jay) Williams is going to through right now. No need to bring what has happened to him up until his preseason trail with the Nets. Since the accident, he lost all of his explosion of course and may have lost his chance at being a Dukie who can reach NBA superstar status. Competition at the NBDL level is unforgiving, now he needs to prove it again in the eyes of NBA execs with the Austin Toros.

Ex-Syracuse star G Gerry McNamara signs with the Bakersfield Jam, who are hoping for a jump start to their fortunes . He just came from playing with Olympiakos Pireaus in Greece after trying out as a free agent with the Orlando Magic, but didn't play enough minutes he thought he should be getting. Therefore, he was granted his release from the club. To allow room for Terry Bobbitt was placed on the injured list.

Ft Worth's Kelenna Azubuike became the first player from the NBDL to make the jump to the NBA on January 2 with him going to Golden St. Nellie obviously has a soft spot for those who played in lower minor leagues. Look at Mario Elie, Manute Bol, and John Starks with his up-tempo styled offense. Wished more NBA coaches did that more but they're all in a win now mode. www.nba.com/dleague/fortwoth

But January is the traditional month where they look for players as they open their wallets and benches to them on 10-day contracts.

Other NBDLers who followed are leading NBDL scorer Andre Brown (Seattle), Dakota's Justin Brown (Sacramento www.nba.com/dleague/dakota ), Idaho's Luke Jackson (Los Angeles Clippers'10-day contract www.nba.com/clippers and www.nba.com/dleague/idaho ), and Albuquerque's Dijon Thompson (Atlanta www.nba.com/dleague/albuquerque). Three NBDL alums are already waived (Andreas Glynidakis, Anthony Robinson, and Desmond Farmer). Shopuld go without saying but players like the aforementioned should be forewarned not to neccessarily get their hopes up in their NBA promotion as they aspire to a NBA lifestyle and instant gratification. Also, will they get decent minutes to show what they can do?

NBDL's big problem is that the culture of basketball is still not really accepting basketball on a minor league level here in the United States and Canada, ala baseball and (ice) hockey. Another thing: excluding teams from the ABA and CBA, most of the teams in the league past and present are based in small city areas that are not really immediately known for its local basketball culture like Bakersfield, California. So coaches and players resist sending player down there and attendance figures aren't known on the league's website or made public in the box scores. Former ESPN writer Scott Ostler chronicles the Bakersfield Jam as it struggles in its first season in the NBDL. Scott, there are also two pro leagues in Africa--one in Angola and the other in Morocco.

NBDL announced another expansion team to join Orem, Utah today. This team will call the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas home boosting the league number to 14 teams next season. This has got to be the Rio Grande Valley Silverados, that ABA expansion team that is scheduled to play next season with its stellar and critically-acclaimed logo, coming in. Because I can't see any pro basketball team on the horizon coming in that area in another league. My theory is that once the Silverado investors looked at the state of the ABA, they decided to go for a more all-around stable and professional basketball league in the NBDL.

Actually I stand corrected on the NBDL taking the Silverados from the ABA. But what I said was based on precedent with the Jam and RimRockers. It must be noted that, as it stands now, the ABA Rio Grande Valley Silverados are slated to play their home games at the McAllen Convention Center in McAllen, Texas, slated to open in a couple of months while the NBDL's Rio Grande Valley team's home court is the Dodge Arena in Hildago, Texas. How could that region be home and big enough to two minor pro basketball teams? Both sides are optimistic.

There are rumours that Ft. Wayne, Indiana will field a NBDL franchise in time for next season boosting its presence in the Midwest. Ft. Wayne was of course the original home for the Detroit Pistons as the Ft. Wayne Zollner Pistons and the longtime home for the Ft. Wayne Fury in the CBA.

More on Luke Jackson's return to Idaho: during his 10-day contract with the LA Clippers, his performance with them was an average of 5.3 minutes with 1 ppg and 1 apg.

Brandt Andersen, the man who brought the NBDL to Orem, Utah, has his own blog. www.nba.com/dleague/utah/brandtandersen_blog.html

NBDL shooting coach John Townsend has his own too: www.nba.com/dleague/johntownsend_blog.html

With their teams on top of their respective divisions, the Ft. Worth Flyers' (18- Sidney Moncrief and the Colorado 14ERS' (19- Joe Wolf became the first ever coaches for the NBDL All-Star Game. Their coaching staffs, like in the case of their big brother's gala, automatically go too. One big difference is that their trainers go with them.

Mates, I'd like to present to you the All-Stars for the first ever 2007 Gillette NBDL All-Star Game in association with 24 Hour Fitness. The game of course will serve as part of the 2007 NBA All-Star Weekend extravaganza in Las Vegas:

Eastern NBDL All-Stars
Will Conroy G Tulsa
BJ Elder G Austin
Renaldo Major G Dakota
Clay Tucker G Arkansas
Alan Anderson F Tulsa
Stephen Graham F Sioux Falls
Pops Mensah-Bonsu F Ft. Worth
James White F Austin
Jared Reiner C Sioux Falls
Loren Woods C Austin

Western NBDL All-Stars
Pooh Jeter G Colorado
Randy Livingston G Idaho
Von Wafer G Colorado
Louis Admundsen F Colorado
Kevinn Pinkney F Bakersfield
Dijon Thompson F Albuquerque
Jawad Adams F Anahiem
Elton Brown C Colorado
Peter John Ramos C Idaho
Brian Chase G NDCELE NBDL

Assistants: Paul Mokeski (Ft. Worth/East) and Kent Davidson (Colorado/West)
Trainers: Takashi Onuki (Ft. Worth/East) and Mark Morrissey (Colorado/West)

It's no surprise that the ones selected by fans and coaches are ones who had at least a little NBA callup or experience. I actually voted for a few of the NBDL All-Stars that made it to the game like Mensah-Bonsu, Dijon Thompson, and Loren Woods (who's a native of my area and the NBDL's Performer of the Week). This should be a very good game coming up next weekend.

Yesterday, the NBDL announced replacement players for its first ever All-Star Game.

Ft. Worth's Luke Schenscher will replace Sioux Falls' Jareld McReiner, who was called up by Milwaukee at centre (center). That's great for all of you mates down there.

Colorado's Rick Rickert will replace his called up teammate Louis Admundsen at center for the West.

Dakota forward Quemont Greer takes over Austin's James White's spot in the East after White gets recalled to San Antonio.

As a reminder, the first ever Gillette NBDL All-Star Game with association from 24 Hour Fitness will be on NBATV live at 4pm US CST from Las Vegas during the NBA Jam Session. (I hope you're not unlucky in Australia and New Zealand)
