Default Bendigo Spirit 2014/2015 season

Kelsey Griffin has been signed to a 3 year deal with the club.

She's also become part PEAK, official ambassador.

http://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au/...award/?cs=2457

Most of the squad seems to be on board as well for the next season, which is good to see especially being a regional team and being able to attract people.

With Kelsey on board Bendigo will have a chance to go for the rare 3 peat. Although Melbourne will have a very talented roster too.

She was most definitely the missing piece of the puzzle when you look back and see their playoff exits. Committing to 3 years gives them a lot of stability, but the big thing in determining if they can reach the GF again will be having Kristi Harrower to lead the team again.

I know it's far too early to know, but the chance to go 3 peat is beyond rare and it will surely weigh in on her wanting to go around, along with her body to deciding to go around one last time.

Be interesting to see what recruits they feel they need to compliment the already 'big' roster.

Gabe Richards signed for 2 years with the Spirit.

Interesting note at the very bottom of the article.

Kelsey Griffin scored 12 points and added nine rebounds to help Connecticut win its fourth straight game, sweeping a home-and-home set from the New York Liberty with a 76-72 victory on Sunday.

If you've got WNBA live access, she was interviewed in the half-time break against Indiana.

Bendigo Spirit hit with some Tax issues relating to foundation years. Wiping out a lot of the profit made over the last two years.

Kristi Harrower still unsure of returning, club will have to raise funds to get the money for her to play.

Surprise about Elyse Penaluna also, with Tayla Robers joining the Spirit will be evening bigger in the front court this year.

"We certainly would have to go on a fundraising effort and have to go out to the community and businesses around Bendigo and try to find some momey for her," he said.

"The playing budget has been spent. We would have to put out a mercy call."

Am I the only one who finds this all a bit off?

The playing budget has been spent? Ahh well yeah - that's because you have Snell, Richards, Griffin, Penaluna, K Wilson, Blicavs, Lavey, Aubrey, Garrick etc.

To sum it up, the Spirit's roster consists of 3 Opals players currently in the World Championship team (Richards, Lavey, Snell), another who was in the Opals squad until the final selections (Wilson), WNBA player (Griffin) the SEABL MVP (Garrick) and a former Olympian (Aubrey).

And now they are crying poor because they can't afford to pay Kristi Harrower? Boo Hoo!

If I was a business owner in Bendigo I wouldn't be handing over a cent. The club has had their financial troubles in the past and relied on the community to bail them out. They go and stack their roster and then ask for more money to play their marquee player? Kristi sure knows how to work it. She does this every single year - refuses to commit to the team right until the week before the season starts until some poor sucker in Bendigo offers her a salary. She's just waiting for the highest offer!

Exactly Swish! What a load of rubbish, Bendigo can't do this every year they have already tried this trick to raise money from the public for Kristi and succeeded.
Kristi should have put team first for once and made her mind up on playing before the team had no money left, this stinks of a plan just to get more money from the Bendigo community.

They obviously needed it and asked for it? Not sure how that equals to any sort of 'trick' They're not Dandenong/Canberra, they're community supported and backed.

She's always been up front saying that she wasn't certain if she would continue, how could you blame her with the GF performance she had, going back to back and having a strong roster and wanting to continue?

If she was having injury issues/sub par performances then the choice would be simple, but who knows. The choice may be made for her in the coming weeks.

Well, yes. Fairly certain that Kristi has said over the last couple of seasons to recruit with the intent of her not playing, because she wouldn't decide until right before pre-season tournament area.

Richards, barely got in and with Joyce around probably the only reason any of the mature-aged WNBL players got a look at.

Lavey, not sure how that one came about but imo not an Opal calibre player YET. Snell, agree.

Wilson, same as Richards.

Griffin (no doubt at all, best pickup from any club in recent memory)

Garrick, strong player with a bright future similar to Blicavs. (agree)

Aubry. Agree (other factors though)

Not sure how they're crying poor? All they're stating is what they've known since the start of the off-season I guess, that to recruit assuming Kristi would not be playing and that if she were to they would try to find a way to accommodate her, if not then I would assume she would fit into the assistant role and her playing days would be over.

The article states that she has been training with the team "to make up the numbers", while others are on World Championship duties.

Now, Kristi herself has mentioned in ABC TV interviews that she is actually based in Melbourne and that the commute to Bendigo every week for team trainings and games is big commitment. I don't doubt that. But would you really make such a commitment just to "make up the numbers" at training if you didn't have any intention on playing? Of course she will go around again this season, she is just playing her cards right and seeing if she can add to her $ value before the season commences.

Well, considering most of her family is involved with the club. Kind of hard not to 'help out' especially being involved yourself and the club being a national based team, along with being good friends with your team-mates? She loves the game and her team that much that the travel is something she just 'has to do' to continue to be apart of it all.

I strongly agree she will most likely continue though, as I said in the last post.

Edit: - I don't believe she's trying to add to her $. If she knew she physically wasn't capable of going around again, she wouldn't. Hence helping out with the numbers to keep her fitness up.

I'm not sure why you think she is being deceptive about it, if anything I've thought they're quite upfront with it all. Both her and the club and it's situations.

I just think she just genuinely loves the game and her team that it's that hard for her to walk away from, from her own words about her team camaraderie/selflessness/friendship both on and off court, I think it's why they were so successful the first year they won the championship (5/6-0 without Camino and Griffin I believe?) and then were able to build on it for the second championship.
