Wow - what an intriguing idea!

Sounds very interesting and if done right could certainly garner a lot of interest and media support. Love the fact that a FTA station has picked up the rights (I'm assuming it is One HD) and that teams if they can, can sign up big international names should they be available.

The fact the NBA and FIBA has had an involvement also signals to me they see this trial in Australia as being a test case for potential widespread launch should it prove successful.

I would love to see and hear more about it...

I don't know exactly why everyone's trying to do what cricket did with T20, I just find it a hilarious comparison. Would like to see the effectiveness of this, especially if its only a one-week tournament, but I'm speculative to the talent they may be able to get given World Champs aren't that far away...

i thought we did this when we shortened our quarters, 20 minutes in the first half, twenty in the second half.

Default High Stakes Hoops

Press Release

21 January, 2010

ONE slam dunks its way into High Stakes Hoops

Network Ten today announced a return of local basketball to commercial free-to-air television with a new tournament the "Footlocker Elite Classic High Stakes Hoops" to air on ONE in April.

The competition, running from the 6th to 11th April in Adelaide will see more than 37 hours of LIVE basketball broadcast over five days on commercial free-to-air television. Steve Carfino and Bill Woods will host the coverage on ONE.

Eight teams will play for a total prize pool of $250,000 over the five days with personalities as team rights owners. Hawthorn Football Club superstar Buddy Franklin has taken charge of the Pythons while Melbourne Vixen, Julie Corletto will own the Coasters and Lanard Copeland (former NBL great, future NBL Hall-of-Fame player, Melbourne Tigers) and Sedale Threatt (former 14 year NBA player, LA Lakers, Seattle Supersonics among other teams), will be team rights owners of RUSH. Brett Maher (former Adelaide 36rs star and Australian team member) will take control of the FLEET team.

Network Ten Head of Sport, David White said basketball had a passionate following in Australia and this tournament will fill a gap in the current Australian television landscape.

"ONE currently televises NBA and NCAA games each week during the American basketball season and the fans have shown us they are passionate about their sport. We believe this tournament with its big name stars, owners from various sporting codes and the creative rule changes will provide a fast and exciting event for our fans to enjoy LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on ONE."

Several rule changes or 'innovations' have been included to make the games more interesting for fans.

"The changes will make the games more dynamic for the fans and players alike delivering innovation that directly answers the call for a unique, free-flowing, every-minute-counts basketball contest," said ECB Managing Director, Jeff Van Groningen.

On two occasions during each game, the coach or on-court captain of each team may opt to use a 'game breaker' phase. Over 3 minutes every three-point shot scored by the 'game breaker' team will count as four points. The backboard at the team's end will be brightly lit in green denoting that the game breaker phase is in process.

In another initiative each individual quarter will be scored separately from the game score. The team that wins each quarter will receive bonus 'elite points' that will be accumulated during the competition and will have an impact on the prize money distribution that reach the Footlocker Elite Classic High Stakes Hoops Final Four. "This change will mean that teams won't wind down the clock at the end of the quarter because while they want to the win the game they will also want those bonus points for winning the quarter as well," Van Groningen said.

ONE broadcast schedule:

Tuesday 6 April & Wednesday 7 April:
12.30pm 8.30pm AEST & Bris / 10.30am 6.30pm Per / 12noon 8pm Ade

Thursday 8 April:
11.30am 7.30pm AEST & Bris / 9.30am 5.30pm Per / 11am 7pm Ade

Friday 9 April:
4.30pm 8.30pm AEST & Bris / 2.30pm 6.30pm Per / 4pm 8pm Ade

Sunday 11 April:
FINAL: 5pm 7.30pm AEST & Bris / 3pm 5.30pm Per / 4.30pm 7pm Ade

I think the NBL has been flirting with innovative rule changes for some time now but they have tried to keep them quiet. Unfortunately Ray Hunt revealed some last night so hopefully he hasn't given the game away*

*figuratively speaking, of course. The sooner he gives the game away, the better.

Would have great to be able to bring NBA players down to play in the tourny, but the playoffs are on in April. Maybe big name ex NBA players or streetballers? One or two on each team?

And I reckon they should make dunks worth more points, so players don't lay the ball in all the time...

With the amount of cash up for grabs and the exposure on One, I'd imagine most players will be quite interested.

See, that's a description of basketball, right there. I'm not quite convinced you can make it more exciting without totally screwing up the reasons we love it in the first place.

Immediate thoughts:

- I'm interested to see BA's reaction- is it a 'rebel' league, or something BA will get behind? The exposure on FTA might help bring them onside- especially with One now available across most of the country- but BA might baulk at the wacky rules.

- It's after the NBL season, so off-contract players could (presumably) compete. It clashes with the last weeks of the NBA regular season, so I don't think anyone on contract will come over, but it might attract the fringe players jumping between 10-day contracts.

- players like John Rillie are probably licking their lips at the four-point-shot powerplays. :P

- team names aren't (totally) cringeworthy.

- ONE likes putting RANDOM words in CAPITAL LETTERS.

Other highlights about rules include:

48-minute games, in line with NBA-style basketball.
Jump balls are used to settle 'tie ups' -- no possession arrow.
Each team will have only one full timeout and one 20-second timeout in each half. Unused timeouts cannot be carried into the second half. Less timeouts will result in a more free-flowing game.
Rosters are limited to 10 players. In addition to players, benches may contain two coaches (maximum) and one team manager.
The look and feel of the sidelines will be clean and minimal.

Interesting "highlights"

The "twenty20" in basketball refers to the old casino adage, as in "twenty on red, twenty on black, you can't lose". It means this new game will be a guaranteed winner.

Something was lost in translation in last nights match, however, as the phrase "twenty on red and black, they can't lose" was thrown about prior to the jump ball.

At this early stage, 4 of the 8 teams apparently have ownership, no signings, but ownership.
With a total minimum prize money being touted of AU$250k, I'm skeptical as to how many big name players would be willing to fly to Adelaide, to share the takings.
The venue choice does seem dubious, especially when there are 2 of the biggest markets in Australia vying for inclusion into the newNBL next season.
Mind you, I've got an unused 2 bedroom rental property close to the Dome. Lock it in at AU$20k/night & I'm all for it.

I find it hard to believe that the NBA are involved or FIBA especially for that matter as BA and the NBL have not sanctioned the event
