Only three teams remain undefeated after just one round.

Thumbs up

No unbeaten teams after just 2 rounds! Cairns Taipans are the only winless team in the league right now! This season is going to be the most competitive season ever!

After 2 rounds:

1.Melbourne
2.Perth
3.Brisbane
4.Sydney
5.Illawarra
6.New Zealand
7.Adelaide
8.Cairns

I think Melbourne is most likely to make finals. All the other top 4 I think could be replaced by an Illawarra.

Bottom 3 Id be surprised if they can seriously contend with their current rosters.

OMFG both Grand Finalists and the Minor Premier from last season are currently sitting in the bottom three places on the ladder!

Looks like we are going to have the most fiercely competitive and exciting NBL season ever! The almighty Perth Wildcats could miss the playoffs for the first time in 100 years!

Seems to come up every so often, but in the event of a 3 team or more tie, a mini-ladder is drawn up taking into consideration only results between tied teams right?

Then if 2 of those teams have the same record, does it then go to pts % between all tied teams or they then use the head to head record between those 2 teams with the same record to break the tie?

Because the scenario that could eventuate is a 4 way tie at 14-14 between Cairns, Perth, NZ and Melbourne. Perth and NZ in that event would be 6-6. So how do they split them next?

Article by Chris Robinson seems to say NZ will go through which is based on NZ having the head to head on us. But if it was points differential between all 4 teams then NZ seem to have lost by bigger margins so Id assume that's not the next tiebreaker?

http://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/bas...5fd31d880456bb

"...Should this weekend’s results go with each home team, who also double as the favourites for each game, we’d see Perth, Cairns, Melbourne and New Zealand all locked together with a 14-14 clip and occupying spots 3 through to 6 on the ladder.

If that hypothetical stands up – and remember, that’s a big ‘if’ – those four teams’ records against one another to determine which two teams make the playoffs and which two teams miss out.

And it would mean Cairns (third) and New Zealand (fourth) moving on to the postseason, with the Wildcats (fifth) and United (sixth) coming up short...."

So if those results go as planned, then Melbourne could be out of contention before the final match v Perth, and Perth could perhaps be more of a chance if Melbourne have only pride to play for. Interesting...

Ok nevermind I had it confirmed that head to head will break any split in a mini-ladder so a 14-14 tie between those 4 teams means Perth and Melb will miss out and NZ and Cairns go through.

Yes, but there could be a 5-way tie if the Bullets upset the Hawks in Wollongong. In that case, Cairns (2nd), New Zealand (3rd) and Perth (4th) would go through. Illawarra (5th) and Melbourne (6th) would miss the finals.

Each team's playoff chances:

Cairns Taipans

Good news first. The mighty Taipans are already in the NBL playoffs due to a massive advantage in their head-to-head records against other opposing teams. If the Taipans beat the 36ers in Adelaide today, they will finish no lower than 3rd. If they lose, they won't finish lower than 4th anyway. Congratulations to the Taipans!

Illawarra Hawks

If the Hawks beat the Bullets at home today, they will finish no lower than 4th. If they lose, they only got a slim chance to finish 4th. The only way for them to make the playoffs is when Cairns and Perth both win their last games.

Perth Wildcats

If the Wildcats beat Melbourne United tomorrow, they will finish no lower than 3rd. If they lose, the only way for them to make the playoffs is when the Hawks lose their last game at home.

New Zealand Breakers

The Breakers can't do anything other than cross their fingers and pray for good luck. They could finish as high as third but their playoff chances are purely depending on other results going their way.

WHAT A DOGFIGHT!
