It does teach good ball handling skills.
Maybe but there are more effective ways of teaching them ball skills that don't come with the bad habits.

Heaven forbid that basketball should be fun
My kids can try anything they like........when it's muckaround time. They're also disciplined enough to know what they can do when it's game time.
That being said one of my girls does have this great move she uses with a left hand layup from the right hand side. When I asked her where she learnt it........."and1"...............
I think It would be good for kids, it could help there all around game!
I think and1 is great, the best playrs for each position generally handle the ball better than anyone else that plays against them!!

It may be "great" to watch and have fun. And 1 is entertainment period.
As a coach there is NO WAY I would support And 1 as basketball development.
creative, fun, competitive!!!

Surely you can teach your kids what works and what doesn't. They should know when they watch the damn things what would and wouldn't fly in a real game.

I voted good.
If you have a disciplined team, once you're convincingly winning the game it can be quite funny to watch some of your teams guys embarrass the other team.
The other day two of my forwards played volleyball, tipping the ball over the hoop to and fro between each other about ten-fifteen times before one decided to put it in the hole.
As for the actual skills, I believe it can work. And it can also make a bad player. Depends on the player itself who decides how to use them. Good streetballers that can play 5 on 5 can be troublesome on defense with their extremely quick hands for steals and blocking passing lanes.

You're meant to respect your opponents and not embarrass them.
Don't you watch Coach Carter

Watched that the other day :D
Somehow I don't agree. I believe in showing no mercy and taking it to your opponents.
I teach my players not to abuse, or act like the man, or engage in sledging, but if they are embarrasing other players in a totally basketball way (ie. blocks, dunks, hitting a J with a a player all over them) then it should be encouraged.

Exactly. It's about putting the ball in the hoop and stopping the opponents from doing the same.

I don't see how that's funny or entertaining. That type of player would have a place on my team, right beside me, on the bench. I've never really followed volleyball. Having fun at someone elses expense is never good sportsmanship.

This is true, but how many streetballers would allow their player an open lane to the basket just so they can stuff them and add to their highlight reel? A real basketballer will actually play defense, meaning they'll force a bad pass, or poor shot well before anyone will need to block someone driving to the basket.
I have a player in my team that requires real concentration to make a simple post move off one dribble. The first mentality is to step back and crossover, fake etc. I found a good quote today that sums up the difference between And1 and basketball:
"a player doesn't need a dozen moves, he just needs a very good move and a counter move to best a defender."
And1 needs dozens of fancy moves for each situation. Basketball needs just two.

I coach a U16s team that is pushing for national honours. A harsh estimate would be maybe a top ten team in the country.

That is secretly my dream job although Tall Blacks, is perhaps just a little bit more likely because of my lack (ie. nil) expertise in rugby coaching.
i remember one time we were hammering this team liek 60- 4 etc at half time, and our coach went to the other team and showed them how to break our press.. ( this otehr teams coach didnt even show up)
so yeah our coahc went over and helped them out a little bit
